FaceSeal™ Technologies™ is the co-developer and marketer of the advanced Fitseal™ line of NIOSH approved ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL adhesion respirators.
Motivated by SARS to find better solution
The illnesses and death of healthcare providers during the SARS outbreak highlighted the need for more effective and reliable respiratory protection. This event was the inspiration behind the development of the Fitseal™ strapless adhesion respirator.
Dr Gabor Lantos, Occupational Health Physician, P.Eng, MBA and Director of PPE for FaceSeal Technologies, stated that, “Fitseal particulate respirators have overcome the dangers posed by inward leakage that exist even with fit-tested conventional masks”.
The gaps between a conventional banded respirator and the wearer’s face allow harmful airborne particles to enter the breathing zone. It has been discovered by the University of Cincinnati that as much as ten times more particulate can leak around the a conventional respirator, than through the filter itself.
Disease-causing particles getting around the filter (Face-seal vs. Filter)
Leading aerosol scientists have shown that a protection level which is derived solely from testing the filter material may be misleading as it does not take into account fit and the leakage of harmful airborne particles between the respirator and the face (face-seal leakage).
Dr. Sergey Grinshpun, Director of the University of Cincinnati Center for Health Related Aerosol Studies has stated, “for filtering face piece respirators or surgical masks, particle penetration through face-seal leakage may exceed 10 times the particle penetration than through the filter media itself.”
Currently, NIOSH certifies the filter material only. Recognizing the importance of face-seal leakage, NIOSH is moving forward on plans to include Total Inward Leakage testing as part of respirator certification. The Fitseal™ is the first and only strapless adhesive respirator that has passed the NIOSH fit test for face-seal leakage as part of respirator certification.
“Respirators that don’t seal properly around the face offer only the illusion of protection” (OSHA Technical Manual, Sec. VIII)
5 years of R & D overcomes face-seal leakage
The result of 5 years of extensive R&D by leading aerosol scientists and medical professionals the Fitseal™ respirator has been certified by NIOSH and is offering enhanced protection for workplace health and safety compliance.. This represents a breakthrough in respirator design as it relates to fit, comfort and protection. As part of respirator certification, Fitseal™ has passed the NIOSH fit test for inward leakage and face-seal integrity.
